We all are all aware that television effects our children in many ways, depending on their age and the content they are viewing, so we all know that TV is not good, but what does it mean? I firmly believe that watching TV before the age of two is unhealthy. The council and media recommend no screen/TV for children under two years and children over eight years only 2 hours a day at the most. |
The longer your child watches TV, the less time there is to play, to learn and socialise and there is no evidence or support that it enhances early learning.
When I was a child we were not allowed to watch TV whenever we wanted. We had an hour at the most and it will be a educational program. In my days the best thing to watch was: “Wielie wielie walie”
We had no need be in front of a TV. We wanted to be outside. Our mother sometimes had to drag us inside and each night the bath will be full of mud, grass and whatever strange creatures we discovered that day. I will be honest, I still loved watching my hour of TV and even during winter times when playing outside was not an option, I will sneak in to the living room and try to watch TV, but mom was always around the corner…
Point is we love watching TV. Some of us like to watch a movie, others their favourite TV show and then you get the couch potatoes who would watch whatever came on just for the sake of watching. There is no arguing that the influence of TV clouds your judgement, it influences your choices, the way you talk and the pressure of being perfect, the need to look like Hollywood stars. With over 70 channels on Cable, you still find yourself saying: “there is nothing to watch!”
Rather take your dogs for a walk, call up your friends and family and go for a picnic, PLAY with your children, before you know it they are to cool to spend time with you.
The best decision was to cut my cable. I have so much more time for myself and most important, to spend quality time with Gabriella. Why would your children need TV if they have a loving Parent.
Get up from that couch and get outside!!!
